Next exam date is June 21 (Tuesday) in Phoenix, after that I think Tucson or San Diego in July. I'm not going to be able to study next week so June 21 is out. I think all the VE's in Yuma are snowbirds, so unless I can find one still here or in Imperial Valley, I be waiting a bit.

I have been doing some "surf shopping". Jason pointed me to a couple of web deals.

Actually Glenn I know that at least one VE here locally is a year-rounder. I know because I heard him on one of the DIN machines today answering questions about how the code test is administered

Wow, Dr. Phillips is even a QSL manager, president of the Northern AZ DX association, and he's got DXCC-CW on his card....pretty impressive!

Congrats, my camp is pretty excited about getting more people licensed after this weekend. I was able to talk to Dwayne who was camped at Glamis from our camp at Gordon's. Unfortunatly I forgot to charge the batteries on my HT before the trip and I didn't bring the 12 volt cable....so we didn't make a latter planned contact

My little Alinco couldn't get into the repeater from Gordon's at all

And the antenna on my rail worked well....until a ride saturday afternoon when just north west of test hill one of the set screws that holds the shaft into the coil came loose and the shaft bounced out, hit my passenger on the head and landed in the sand. Thankfully I found it - but need to get a new set screw and loctitie them in next time if I'm going to use it on the rail

I noticed last week Dr. Phillips starting adding his call sign to his signiture.

I was able to talk to Dwayne who was camped at Glamis from our camp at Gordon's.

From the rail, truck and I believe the HT too.

What did you get?

I picked up a handheld icom from DJW a month ago. Just a matter of sitting down with it for a while. Just no time right now, leaving for Glamis for Thanksgiving in 2 weeks and have a lot of stuff to do to the sandrail and trailer.

I'll bet Dwayne already has the .120 and .88 machines programed in there. If so then all you need to do is make sure it's got a charge on it and bring it out

Most weekends I'm monitoring both of those repeaters all day/night now that the season has started.

I've been monitoring them too, but can't reach the 146.88 from home with my HT. Can hear it OK and can reach the 147.120 no problem.

I heard you and DJW talking last Friday night. Tried calling, no dice.

The .120 is easier to hit...but has more traffic. The .88 is nice because there's almost no one else using it and from the dunes it's easy to hit even with a 3watt HT. Yours is a full 5watt IIRC so you should have no problems.

I'd say late afternoon early evening or late at night are the best times to catch me listening. But there's almost always someone listening on at least one of those two.

The 146.88 is in it but not the 147.120.

My bad, I put in Brawley 146.6700 on memory 4.

I monitor 146.6700 occasionally, I tried a couple calls on the .88 repeater after my "incident" this weekend, but didn't seem to be hitting the repeater, probably coulda tried simplex too but didn't think of it at the time.

Got to tell you I felt much safer out duning this year having my radio and GPS with me. We were out about a 1/2 mile NE of hill 5 and I had a clear signal to 147.120. Did not try broadcasting anything, but I heard others talking. Just nice to know if you ever need help out there you can broadcast your coordinates and possibly get help shortly.

Mark, You may want to try hitting the 147.120 and 146.880 machines next time you're out. I was at Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) on Saturday and could not hit the .88 repeater with my 5 watt HT. I was able to talk to Jason (jhitesma) on simplex (146.560) at the top of the ridge where the drags run and then again atop a dune by Test Hill. I could not reach Jason on simplex or the .88 at the base (in the valley between the hill and the canal) of Test Hill.

I will be looking for another antenna for my HT as well as a mobile antenna I can attach to my Jeep.

There was quite a bit of traffic on the 147.120, so I didn't try it. I don't think I would have a problem with it though as I can hit from Yuma with my HT.

Don't know any yet but I expect a few more before the end of the season. It looks like there's enough interest and we can probably get a class together here in Yuma. But need to figure out a few more details before I have anything firm.

I'm surprised there are not more hams on the board now that the FCC removed the morse code requirement from the higher class licenses.

The technician class license is really easy to pass everyone.

Passed my no code Genral this year.

But all my gear is put away.

I'm putting in 960 sq ft. of garage/recording studio/shack/home office, out back.

Should be on HF in about a month.
