Need a dune group to camp with?

Post by Woodglue » Fri Oct 24, 2008 3:12 pm

I've met a lot of people in the past year or so who are in search of a group to camp with. We all know the stories, 'the old group doesn't want to go anymore', 'my usual group keeps cancelling', 'We just cant find people similar to us', etc.

Allow this thread to be a place where the 'camp-less' come together.
Perhaps the answer to these questions can help the process.
 Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire?
 Sun up: iced-tea or beer?
 Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails?
 No music or loud music?
 Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride?
 Dogs: Leashed or Run Free?
 Kids or No Kids?
 Family or Boys-Trip?
 North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes
 South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's)
 Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]?
 ???? or ???? <--- you add the questions

I can't play the game but, for me, it would look something like this:
:!: Camp Fire, iced-tea, beer / cocktails, No music, Sun Rise Ride, Dogs Leashed, 5yo Kid, Family my wife and occasionally my dad.
We are a family oriented group who are good stewards of the dunes. We like camping in the washes, and we're inclined to drink it up after the sun sets, but we forego the party to rise and ride early. We lost our dune group about a year ago, because ____________, and we're looking for some fun folks to circle the wagons with.
Need a dune group to camp with?
Holler Up here, then schedule it in the Dune Trip Threads.

OK, I'll bite first.

Wife and I are in our 40's, our two boys are in high school. All of us ride quads.
Circling the wagons in the washes is our preference.
Low volume or no music.
We have no dogs, and yours should be controlled (on leash or well behaved and watched).
A daytime beer can be refreshing, but don't drive/ride impaired.
We like a nice, quiet, campfire while having a few sodas, beers, or cocktails along with a good dose of stories, jokes, and laughs in the evening.
We ride on and off throughout the day - not everyone chooses to go on every ride. Some rides are fast and hard, others are moderate and easy; there's always plenty of riding for everyone.
We're good stewards of the dunes and always leave them cleaner than we found them.

Many of our dune group have gone on to other things - motorcycles on hardpack, boats/jetskis, or la-z-boys - so we're looking to hook up with some new like-minded duners. PM me if you'd like to camp and ride together so we can coordinate.

 ???? or ???? <--- you add the questions

 Perfer camp fire: but sobe bombs/ fireworks are cool to watch.
 Ice tea: Call me a wuss but riding in the day is much better with energy
 Beer: But I will get drunk almost every night
 Music... but not loud
 Sun rise ride: if its going to be a hot day
 Run free: I like to let my dog off around camp, but then again he is pretty well mannered... but it all depends on the group I am with. I might just leave him home
 No kids... dont have any, but wouldn't mind it if there was any in the group
 All depends on the trip, sometimes I like to take it easy and other times I just want to ride or party

I never really had a constant group to go with, or any contacts... Duned a couple of time when I was younger and once last year, so I am pretty new to this

Welcome to the board kubo :!: Have fun, chat it up, and enjoy.

One suggestion to add to the comments is where you prefer to camp.

I'll give a go. I just posted in wide open sand that I haven't posted since March. but here is what we look for:

Camp Fire. Fireworks are ok I have some. What is a Sobe bomb? :?: Sun up Pepsi, Water. Aftenoon Pepsi and maybe a beer Sundown more Pepsi, maybe another beer or a southern comfort and yes, Pepsi, Margaritas are good but nothing to excess except Pepsi. Music is good as long as we can talk over it and I can understand the lyrics and no thumping bass when I am trying to sleep. Don't party hard, too old. Dogs are cool as long as they don't bark all night and jump on me. Kids are cool I have kids I don't let THEM bark all night or jump on people either  . Hell, I'm a big kid. Family oriented. As for the location I don't know as we haven't been there yet to form any opinions. I guess washes as it is the most friendly at this point in time. Since we are in the Phoenix area we can go almost anywhere in the dunes. Same distances.

My kids are 18 going on 30 and me and the wife are late 40's going on 50. We just don't party hardy anymore. But love to play.

Dont' have a group yet but hope to change that.

Yes I do like Pepsi. I'm supposed to cut back due to type II diabetes and I have. I mix diet in every other non diet.

At least we are not in the south where EVERY soft drink is a COKE

 No music or loud music? Break out the acoustic guitar and come up with some silly lyrics.

 Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? Mostly camp fire Sobes are OK every once in a while
 Sun up: iced-tea or beer? Coffee and Diet Pepsi
 Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? Its all about the Diet Squirt topped of with some hot chocolate later in the night
 No music or loud music? Music everyone knows played low enough to talk over.
 Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? I'm known to be the last at the fire but I wouldn't call it a party
 Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? Keep them away from my food!!!!
 Kids or No Kids? I'll give kids a shot. Restraining children should not be limited to car seats
 Family or Boys-Trip? Both, mostly Family although my family doesn't go.
 North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes Washes mainly
 South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) Might do that once every couple of years
 Like to mooch food? YES :D

Jokes about burning my favorate chair are not funny. That poor chair has been through enough already.

:!: WARNING :!: I often find things in the sky, and spend about a half hour saying "What the heck is that?" probably my favorate thing to do at night around the fire.

A sugestion for question Woody Language? Some parents are cuss like sailors around their kids, Some don't. I mean ya it pretty much goes with out saying but there are some adults who don't like the "foul language" and there are some people who every other word out of their mouth is F-this or F that. OH WAIT  Is that what you meant about Family or Boys trip?

Thanks Jon, I've added this to the list:
 Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]?
The question "Family or Boys trip?" is more about who comes out to the dunes with you.
For example Off Season Night Ride Trips are almost always "Boys Trips". Girls and wives do occassionally join. Whereas my Dune Season Trips are Family events.

Ooo! I forgot about that. When we would go to R/C Model Airplane meets they were usually out away from the city lights and we would gather 'round the campfire, tilt our heads back and we would start looking for movement in the sky. Then someone would yell out "I have a satellite" then we would all try to see if we could see it. Great fun unless the moon is out.

Just Ride :)
 Campfire, Smores, Stories without F-bombs
 Doesn't have to be Church Chat, but my kids already hear enough Sailor Slang from me when something breaks. I guess I'm a swearaholic & don't want to get sucked in
 Sunup; Ice Tea, Coke or Red Bull
 Sundown; Water, Ice Tea, Coke (Pepsi Sucks), Hot Chocolate
 Music if you like, but leave the Boom Boom @ home in your kids room.
 Sun Rise rides are cool
 Good Dogs, everyone thinks they have one, but few do. Mine died after 15 years of riding in the back of my old Toyota he had way over 100k on him :(
 Kids every trip. That's what Dad's are for
 Family Trips or I'd have a lot Smaller Trailer with a Faster Quad.
 Mostly washes, but it's all good from Butter Cup up to the Washes. (edit wife & kids like W10 mostly, we'll try to reexpand their horizons later this season). Buttercup on the West side used to be our main place from 86 to 02. Don't care much for Gecko unless it's a reeeeeally off weekend & you can park.
 Mostly Family Rides for TRX90 & up. A good long ride with the Big Boys (& Girls) is fun too when possible :)
 Leave it better than you found it
 OFF WEEKENDS ARE THE BEST :!: , like Veteran's Day

This is almost too funny, I was reading these posts the other day and my wife came in to see what I was doing and why I was not working on the bathroom. I was reading this thread and she started laughing saying that this was a “dating service”.

So now every time I talk about the dunes, (about 20 times a day), she asks if I have a “date” yet… I told her it was not funny, very serious stuff as the dunes must be enjoyed with likeminded people and our group is falling apart.

So here goes:

Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? Camp fire, Boy Scout-Master style, good stories, smoores
Sun up: iced-tea or beer? Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi,
Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi,
No music or loud music? None or low enough to talk over.
Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? NOT party hard and mostly NOT sun rise ride.
Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? Leashed, I have 2 that get lost if not contained
Kids or No Kids? Kids, Kids and more Kids. See camp fire above
Family or Boys-Trip? Both are great when planning for each.
North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes: Washes, 13 or farther south, Gecko sometimes
South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) Need to try it down there sometime
Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]? Church chat, remember the kids, no F-bombs
Always leave the camp clean, pack it in – pack it out… ( Scout master here)

Have been going to mother G for over 40 years and can not get enough. I have been know to drive out just to spend a few hours in the sand at times when a fix is needed.

Quads are a blast, have an old school buggy that is the most fun for me, and now the Jeep is always good to go.

We are always looking for more people to meet up with. Were the older group with the young attitude. We all have buggies and go to the washes #2 and #3. We have Class A's and Trailers. All are welcome. Let us know if you would like to hang out with us and you are more than welcome. Kids are late 20's and a 3 year old Grand son that loves to ride. Love Sobe's and after riding a few beers, campfires and music are welcome. We like morning rides and all day rides as well. Some go, some stay. We just have good fun. Obey speed limits and courtesy to all. It's our Dunes and it is up to ALL of us to keep them open. We are going this weekend the 6th thru the 8th and next weekend as well. We have Limos, Wickeds, Tatums and a Tazcar. All are encourage to apply. Dune Safe.

Here's my entry:

Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? Both... but only if the glass from the sobe-bomb(s) is cleaned up.
Sun up: iced-tea or beer? Breakfast (not beer).
Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? All of the above.
No music or loud music? Both.
Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? I usually like to sleep in regardless.
Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? Depends on where we're camped, but usually leashed.
Kids or No Kids? No preference really, but I'm not a baby-sitter.
Family or Boys-Trip? Both.
North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes Canal (by Gecko) is preferred.
South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) Buggy flats, or 5-mile (is that still open?)
Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]? I'm a potty-mouth, but can control myself if necessary.

I'm 30 years old, my brother is 34... we grew up riding quads but switched to 2-wheelers about 4 seasons ago. Our group has all but completely fallen apart (people having kids and muttering some blasphemy about growing up)... the more dirt bikes, the better, but we definitely don't discriminate against those who choose 4 (or 3) wheels.

We ride just about every weekend, dunes or otherwise (Oco Wells, Superstition, Plaster City)... hit me up if interested.

Thanks. It has been a while... I was quite involved at one point, but I must admit, it can be difficult to stay motivated in this fight. I'm surprised I still have the title of "Gov meeting coordinator".

Well - Our group keeps dwindling and dwindling. We are from Las Vegas and would like to add some new friends to the group. . .

Perhaps the answer to these questions can help the process.

Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? USUALLY CAMP FIRE TO START AND LATER IN THE NIGHT A FEW SOBE BOMBS FOR FUN

Sun up: iced-tea or beer? MOSTLY COFFEE DRINKERS IN THE MORNING. BEER IN THE AFTERNOON. COCKTAILS AT NIGHT. Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? WHATEVER YOU LIKE -- YOU WILL SEE A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING AT OUR CAMPSITE.

No music or loud music? MUSIC - NOT TOO LOUD - THE KIND YOU CAN STILL TALK OVER AND EVEN SING TO IF YOU WANT!

Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? MIX AND MATCH. THOSE WHO LIKE TO PARTY STAY UP AND HAVE FUN WHILE RESPECTING THOSE WHO GO TO BED EARLY.
Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? LEASHED -- YOUR DOG, YOUR RESPONSIBLITY.

Kids or No Kids? WE HAVE KIDS IN OUR GROUP FROM 10 YEARS OLD AND UP. YOUR KID, YOUR RESPONSIBLITY.

Family or Boys-Trip? THERE IS USUALLY ONE BOYS TRIP AND THEN THE REST ARE FAMILY.

South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) WE USUALLY CAMP AT OGILBY

Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]? DEPENDS WHO'S AROUND - MILD POTTY MOUTHS WITH CONTROL (WE ARE ADULTS :-) )

Our main group is late 30's to late 40's with children from 10 - 20 years old. Usually quads and rhinos, but, depending on who's joining us, rail and motorcycles too. A fun group with an occasional "drama" to give us something to laugh about!

Next trip is Thanksgiving -- join us!

I need a new group. Previous group-kids off to college and switched to dual-purpose bikes.
enjoy camp-fire more than bombs (bombs ok once but that is enough)
sun-up drink- diet coke
sun-down drink a cocktail is good but not necessary, I never drink and ride
music is ok as long as its not offensive lyrics or annoying volume
dogs are fine leashed or not if they are well behaved
kids are great- mine are adults and I have a grand daughter
family trips are best but I have gone solo with the boys
camp North dunes-Gecko in the past but Glamis Flats in past 2 yrs due to Gecko crowding-I'll go where ever I can get my rig in
I try to keep my language clean as best I can, but there are those occasional slips

I'm 55 yrs old, married, 3 adult daughters, 1 grand daughter, 1 dog. Not everyone goes on all trips. I have aClass A MH with 6X12 trailer and 2 quads- YFZ450 and 660 Raptor

quadfather,

You guys sound like a pretty good group :) We're not much for the wildlife anymore :( I like to ride & I would just as soon my kids didn't get SOBE BOMB 101 or How to build a better hangover :P in our camp  They can learn that stuff later [-X , but I hope they won't feel the need to learn the hard way like most of us do [-o<

Our next trip we're tagging along with another group to W10 mostly families, so I don't know how much room there will be :?: Presidents Day & Spring Break are open for pretty much anything. Those 2 more trips are in the works maybe to W10, but if it's full we look for somewhere else :) I was thinking we might check out the Great Wall of Mexico one trip :?: We haven't seen it since it was just a road with monuments every few miles

Our Family is pretty quiet. I don't drink anymore. I get terets syndrome JK when things go wrong, but I'm working on it  I ride a TRX250R, My Wife & Daughter ride TRX250EX's & our youngest my Son rides a TRX90.

My answers to the questionaire are above if you want to check it out  We met WoodIsGood last trip & went for a ride :) They seem like a good group

Thanks for the reply. I would like to meet up with your group. I have my work scheduled for time off at MLK weekend (5 days) and President's Wkend (4 or 5 days off). I don't mind just following along behind riding last/clean-up if you want to lead your family on rides. I'm used to following kids at their pace and enjoy seeing them learn to ride and enjoy the dunes. I'v done it with mine, the neighbor's and plenty of friends over the past 20 plus years. you can contact me on my cell 661-965-2724. Thanks again.

Well with X-Mas almost upon us it is time to get a spot at Wash #3. Ther will be about 4-5 rigs in our group this time. Rails, quads and Rhino's. All are welcome, family style on sunday the 27th. We will be there thru Friday the 2nd. Look for us if interested or just stop by and say hi. At night you can't miss us as we have a VERY bright strobe for all the night riders to find there way back home. I have a Greenish Class A with open trailer that has a Gold Limo and Purple Taz-Car (wifes) on it. We would love for all to join in. We only ask that you bring at least 1 more bag of trash out with you than you brought in. Help clean the Dunes a little bit. Anyway, my cell is always on 602-799-9424. Let us know if you are coming so we can save a spot for you too.

The group I used to camp with is getting to lame, to old or to poor.

Problem is, I live in Reno, Nevada, far away from you good folks down there in them southern desert regions.

Yes, I'm a hard core conservative, and nothing will ever change that, but , as a family, we like to get out there, with all, people, I don't care what color your shorts are or if you even wear shorts.

Rip up some smooth sand, explore places we've never been before............. :D

Kick it at the fire ring, with some good mellow tunes and all is good. =D>

hssc you are more than welcome to join in with the few old guys that I hang with. just holler up when you decide to make that 10-11 hour drive down.

We are over fifdy, ride 660s, enjoy a big fire, a beer or two, and ribbing and laughing at each other. Me and Bill are almost always out together.........oil and water in personalities, but we are buds.

Sounds like a good time, would really like to take you up on that someday. I have a daughter in school, so kind of hard to go and the trip is 650 miles from Reno. We'd go HWY 50 through Vegas. We do have a week in April (spring break). Things start to really warm/heat up down there in Glamis then. I know it can be nice, just roll the dice.

We too ride quads (660 for me) and we have a four seat sandcar.

Do you think they'll have the other 49,000 acres open by then ? [-o< [-o< [-o<

Sandcock, I see you are from North County. If I were to ever move back to Southern CA., that is where I'd want to live. I've always loved the surfing in Nor Co. Lots of good times. I rip it up on two sticks now, working with my daugther, she's comming along quite nicely. She's afraid of nothing. One thing I do wish though, is to teach her the ways of the ocean. We talk about it, but, you have to live it, to really know.

Our spring break plan is central Nevada. Some small dune areas and lots of exploring. Some amazing stuff out there.

Hello all, just found this website yesterday and signed up about 5 minutes ago. Have been looking on websites with name Glamis. All give great information, but this one by far gives all the specifics to rookies for camping.
My family and 2 other families are taking our first trip to Glamis for Thanksgiving and we are all excited !! We don't know what area to go to, or if we have to reserve the campground area spaces. We have a 12 yr old son, our friends have a 14 year old son and another boy and girl younger than 12. Would love any advice on where to go for our first trip out to Glamis.

Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? Love campfires, but honestly don't know what a Sobe_bomb is !
Sun up: iced-tea or beer? Iced tea
Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? All of them
No music or loud music? Music that you can hear but can talk over w/o vulgarities
Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? Not so hard and not so early, but depends on the people we meet !!
Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? Dog will stay home, other people's depends on the dogs demeanor
Kids or No Kids? We'll have kids
Family or Boys-Trip? Family trip
North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes Other than different locations, we have no idea.
South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) Ditto, would like some experienced campers to chime in on this one please.
Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]? No sailor slang, but we're not angels either. We may let out an occasional bad word, but we're not disrespectful people.

Well, first things first…. Welcome to the board dannyandlaura!

Glamis is an awesome place, as I’m sure you’re aware!
I would recommend the washes for your camping location, but I’ve always been partial to the Washes. This is south of Hwy78, East of the Dunes and West of the Train Tracks. I wouldn’t circle the wagons right up against a sand dune, as a windy day can quickly become a sand storm in your camp. If you are at least 50 yards from the nearest dune, sand could still blow through your camp, but it will be at ground level, as opposed to the height of a dune. The Washes are actual culverts that run beneath the train tracks every so often and they are numbered starting with Wash 1 immediately south of Hwy78 and the numbers continue south. There are BLM pit-toilets located at Washes 4, 6 & 10, but over the Thanksgiving weekend these washes will be quite crowded. To beat the crowds you can go farther down [into Wash 15, 20, 25, etc]
While the wash itself could have soft sand, the area between the washes is dirt. Kind of like ‘Fluffy Hardpack’. Watch where you’re going, and you shouldn’t get stuck.

Are you bringing your own group, or are you looking to join the Turkey Group of one of our members here? Heck, I bet you’ll even be able to find a Turkey Group for your group to join! Either way, be sure to let us know what your dates are and we’ll get them posted up in the ##November 2009 Dune Trip Plans## thread.

Danny and Laura:
Sounds like you are a family oriented group. I am a 30 year veteran of the dunes and have been all over. I am particularly partial to Ogilby as they are filled with more family types. Glamis can get wild on the large busy weekends like thanksgiving. Some folks find that appealing, I and my group dont. While we are far from tea totalers we go to ride and party at night. Our group consists of mainly over age 50 quad riders and one idiot on a 3 wheeler. We are a very experienced group. After spending time in all the areas my preference is Ogilby. Dunes are great, little law enforcement and the crowds smaller. I think it also depends on where you live and which dune area is easier for you to access/commute to. It seems most of the LA inland empire folks tend to go to Glamis, Buttercup and Gordons the San Diego/Phoenix crowd. You may want to vary your trips throughout the season and see what you like the best. I would hook up with an experienced group so you can learn the safety riding tips of duning. I've seen many a rookie get hurt for not knowing what to do. Be careful and learn the ropes. Further be familiar with the rules to avoid getting ticketed. Also you don't need reservations but you do need a permit. If you are going to go to the dunes more than 3 trips get the yearly pass otherwise the week pass will work for you. They may check your pass at your camp site or on your way out. Good luck and happy safe duning.

Welcome to the board newbee

I've camped all over in Glamis. IMO the washes are the best place for beginers, especially with kids.

It's imperative you follow a leader with some sand dune experience your first few trips. I've seen too many people wadded up at the bottom of a dune b/c they couldn't read the terrain.

It dangerous...but fun as heck...just respect it :!:

 No music or loud music? Low to moderate music, anything but gangsta rap.
 Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? Mellow party, up early, three rides a day.
 Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? Run free. They enjoy the freedom of the desert as much as I do.
 Kids or No Kids? Kids most of the time but I enjoy 1 or 2 boys trips per season.
 Family or Boys-Trip? See above
 North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes? Washes with the kids...I don't care when it's a boys trip
 South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's)
 Sailor Slang or Church Chat [Language choice]? Depends on who's around.

But of course GB it was a test to see who pays attention to the posts. I also was using some of that self deprecating humor.
What the heck is self deficating humor?
Just like you fog to change the dynamics of the conversation. If it was deficating I dont know C*ap about that. But Deprecating means to cut yourself down.

 Sobe-Bomb or Camp Fire? Campfire! If your going to make something explode, Ill make sure you are the one consumed by fire

 Sailor slang or church chat? Depends on who Im around and how much I have drank. Read on below

 Sun up: iced-tea or beer? Coffee.

 Sun down: soda, beer or cocktails? Depends on the group I am with. I have been known to let my hair down in the dunes, but the wife gets really mad when I do!

 No music or loud music? I have never been in a group where we can all agree on the music thing, so I would rather just have it off.

 Party Hard or Sun Rise Ride? Im not a morning person, but in the dunes, I like to ride around 8 or 9

 Dogs: Leashed or Run Free? I would love to bring my dog, but I cant trust him to run free, so I dont bring him. I dont mind if you bring yours, as long as they are well behaved.

 Kids or No Kids? I have a little one. Brian, you can't cook her!

 Family or Boys-Trip? Thats up to my wife.

 North: Gecko, Osbourne, Glamis Flats, Washes Anywhere, as long as Im in sand.

 South: Ogilby, Buttercup, Midway, Dune Buggy Flats (Gordon's) ?

 Like to mooch food? I am self sustaining. And thanks to my belly, I dont really need much food.
