All things being equal:

380 miles to Glamis / 8 mpg = 47.5 gallons required to get there

47.5 x 4.59 gallon = $218 (as of now in the bad new days)

47.5 x 3.00 gallon = $142 (those were the good old days)

218 - 142 = $76 difference now vs. then

If I really want to go, $76 is not a deal breaker (he said while some oil company executive smiles).

I can adjust my budget by not buying some worthless piece of bling and still get to play with the family at the sand dunes.

Well put Kevin!

I do believe that there is a certain level of fatigue that has lead to a slow down of traffic here. Still, it is available as a resource, and I don't foresee this board going away any time soon. What I would like to see is more, younger users, along with newly minted Duners, joining the discussion.

I started buying fuel at Learner's Gas @ 24.9 cents a gallon! 45 years ago! Lot's of fuel under the bridge!

Me thinks that the individuals that frequented the bbs daily have moved on for various reasons of their own. They were the ones that kept the bbs vibrant.

Maybe?
But, the last 6 years have seen a "Can't waste the $$" climb. The dump in home values lessening the ability to spend hard earned dollars for recreation. The lost of high paying jobs? Not to mention those who are now retired on a fixed income.
Let's not forget the young people who are in the "Working for minimum income" and less likely to spend what little they make on something their parents paid for in their youth.
Again, just hard enough to be reminded how is not fun to be banging away oh site like these!

I hear ya 4Ever, but there was the hardcore crowd you could always depend upon to come up with stuff and had an opinion about everything and thought it should be yours  I know they still check the bbs out, but refrain from commenting.

Ok, I hear you about how the younger generation is having difficulty affording things that their parents or grand parents did.
But the numbers don't bear this out.

That said, when I first visited Glamis for Thanksgiving in 1968, I'm told the crowd was approximately 25,000.
California population was approximately 19,000,000 in 1968.

Last year, the crowd estimate for Glamis on Thanksgiving was 165,000.
California population is approximately 37,000,000 in 2010.

1968 vs. 2011
Glamis Thanksgiving attendence up 660%
California population up 94%

I hear ya Booga-dune-poon, my first visit was Halloween in 1971 and it was similar in crowd size. The difference was my brother and I had to pay our own way, so we never knew what it was like for the kids now days (LOL)

I am new to buying diesel but last winter I remember buying fuel for 3.38 a gallon and was so excited. On the flip side I also remember buying premium gas for a buck a gallon too but that was 25 years ago.

I made my first trip out this season a few weekends ago. The one way mileage is 220. The trip there I used 15 gallons of fuel or a little less than 1/2 a tank. On the trip home the wind was so bad I used 35 gallons  to get home. While for planning purposes and poops and giggles the math is fun but it is not always accurate.

I noticed the low activity too.
I'm returning here after a 5+ year hiatus. Funny, I couldn't login with my original name and password but I could create same same name from before. Guess it has to do with the referances to the "new" board.
Got another low end buggy a few months ago. I HAVE to dune again!!!!
Just starting to go through posts of all the new restrictions for Glamis that have occured while I was away.
I plan on going Jan/Feb. Provided my buggy decides shape up and run better.
Any new closures/rules/police activity tips?

Thankfully, no new closures, although the large closures from the PMV suit are still in place. California did pass a new law that seems to primarily affect side by sides, but may also impact buggies. There is a thread about the law here on the forum. I did see a few more rangers in October, and even had them stop by our camp (one of the group didn't have his pass on display), but I haven't seen anything else that would cause me concern over the LEO activity at the dunes.

On the bright side the LEO just gave me a warning :D :D :D but the point was recieved that the pass must be displayed at all times while in the ISDRA.

I have my theories why this board has dried up a tad. As a use to be frequent poster I stopped going on because I hadn't seen anything new or vibrant discussions. I think the Facebook postings are short lived and dont really offer too much in information about what's happening in the dunes. Meaning you can't go very far back in postings and see what subjects have been addressed. I still feel this is the best format for asking questions and getting good informed answers on subjects. Or just offering an opinion. I have always enjoyed this board and all the posters some I include as friends now. But I think when Woodglue stopped posting because of his employer watching network activity he had to stop. Now that Woodglue has become the boss maybe he will start posting more again. But I still check the board activity and it appears to becoming more active. Maybe the Facebook thing for us is finally waning.
