Sad news....:( Man killed in Dunes crash

A Bakersfield man dies after a pickup partially lands on the ATV he and three
others were riding on; it’s the first fatality this year.

By Leslie Parrilla
lparrilla@thetribunenews.com

A Bakersfield man died Saturday and three people were injured at the Oceano
Dunes during one of the busiest times of the year.

The death marks the first fatality at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular
Recreation Area this year. Two people died in 2005 in separate accidents in July
and October.

On Saturday, Jerry Carter, 27, was pronounced dead at Marian Medical Center in
Santa Maria, said Rey Monge, deputy superintendent for the state parks’ Oceano
Dunes District.

The collision happened around 1:30 p.m. when a pickup driven by Sean Brandon
Evans, 24, of Atascadero, with three passengers raced over a dune, became
airborne and partially landed on an ATV carrying Carter and three other people,
officials said. Also on the ATV were Bakersfield residents Shawn Barton, 28,
Ryan Gladdin, 33, and an unidentified 5-year-old boy.

The front end of the truck landed on the ATV, then it flipped onto its side.
Barton, Gladdin and the boy were taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital
with moderate to major injuries, officials said.

No one in the truck was injured.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, Monge said. The investigation is
continuing.

"It’s just a matter of the drivers not watching their speed," said Monge. "It is
the busiest weekend of the year. Drinking is not a major factor in the major
accidents that happen here. That’s a myth that there’s a bunch of drunken
drivers crashing into each other at the Dunes. It’s mainly people not watching
their speeds. They forget themselves. They go faster than they should."

Monge estimated there have been 10 to 20 accidents at the Dunes on holiday
weekends.

Thousands of people have arrived for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, and
campgrounds at the Oceano Dunes are sold out.
Nothing is achieved without effort --- the fundamental force that brings success...:)

It's never good to hear this kind of thing, but it is nice to hear:

Right on!

Here is more on the story, including info that during an interview with the local paper they were trying to get the wife of the victim to agree that the beach needs to be closed. She replied "he and she would NEVER have used an incident like this to shut it down."

The Park staff at Oceano are class act folks. I've worked with them for the last 2 years and they are some of the few that actually "Get it".

Condolences to the family.

Sad news indeed.

How to properly crest a dune is one of the most, if not the most, important techniques of safe duning. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why that is. :?

Very sad news indeed. The last time I was at Pismo on a holiday weekend was the last time I go on a holiday weekend. There were so many people out in the dunes it scared the you know what out of me. Just can't have fun when that happens.

I hate to bring up this old thread, on account of its nature, but in the UtilityOffRoad forum posted an account number for the children of the man that did not survive. Im sure that we can all understand the need for support of the family of a fellow off roader.

quote:
"As for Jerry Carter, the young father whom did'nt survive, his 2 children have a future college fund set up at Wells Fargo Bank, Paige Carter(mom)3827358023 is acct #."

Kids in a pickup, no flag,, blindly jumping dunes, ignoring the safety of others.

Hey! The "unidentifyed 5-Year old" who was the son of Ryan and 6-Years old actually is me! This post is like a slap in the face to me and I'd like to let you all know that the man who killed Porkchop fled the scene after landing on our UTV. He left and got alcohol which he consumed on his way back to the scene during what this effed up county calls "Cool Down Period." Today I'm 16 years old. This accident changed my life. It's been over 10 years and I still remember the scene waking up after being ejected. This ****** who killed Jerry Carter has not paid the price for what he has done. I spent years crying to the sound of sirens, even more the sound of helicopters and today I still struggle to visit the dune or listen to "The Way I Am" by Merle Haggard, which is a song played at his funeral. I was 6 during all of this and I am now 16. RIP Jerry "Porkchop" Carter. Love you brother.

Not to burst your bubble, but being in the accident, I know alcohol was a factor. "Right on!" Are you serious? What about the part where a father, husband, only child, and close friend was taken at the hand of a reckless ******?
