Pomona Off Road Expo Oct 3rd-5th

Post by Sloppyduner » Tue Aug 19, 2008 4:59 am

Its that time again. The Sand Sports Super Show is quickly followed by the Pomona Off Road Expo. This year it is only two weeks after the Sand Sports Super Show. It has turned into an event that rivals both the Extreme show in Costa Mesa and even the Sand Sports Super Show with exhibits and vendors covering EVERY aspect of off roading.

This year it will be a three day event.
Friday Oct 3rd 2PM-8PM
Saturday Oct 4th 9AM-6PM
Sunday Oct 5th 9AM-5PM

The ASA has had a great response at this show even though its so soon after the SSSS. It is very important that we make a good showing in Pomona.

This leads us to ask for volunteers for this event. I know its more than a month away, and right at the beginning of dune season, so we need to make special arrangements far in advance for volunteers.

We recognize that many of you give us endless hours at the SSSS. I ask though for a few of you to give a little more.

A critical need for this show, is the need for volunteers on Friday the 3rd, a weekday.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time on this weekend your help would be greatly appreciated.

Please E-mail me at trynspellpergl@sbcglobal.net if you will be able to give time at this event.

I could be a maybe. Lot of overtime going on right now throught the end of Sept. It's begining to get my rear end, so if I'm rested, I'll show.

Not to fret washr, still commited to the 16th of Sept. and hooking up around 8 in the a.m.

You know I would be there if I was home but I will be back east during that time frame. So I can't help.

Sloppy does need some more help with this show. Its fun and you will get to meet a bunch of great people.

Jon,
I can be there for nine hours on either Oct04 or Oct05. What ever day works best for you. Lemme know.

And, Elsinore carpool will be available on that date too.

That right there is a true ASA volunteer. Not only will I give a whole day but I'll offer to bring some people up with me. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Really the ASA needs LOTS more help. The possibility of the ASA not being at this event due to lack of volunteers is very real.

I go to a lot of these shows. CORVA, SDROC,ORBA, all pay to join orgs, and their booths are FULL of volunteers, and we're there with a bare bones crew

Sloppy, did you send an email to local ASA members that checked "volunteer at events" in their profile?

I sent a bunch of e-mails today, all something like this:

Subject: Joe Duner, the aSa hopes you can assist us

Greetings Joe Duner,

My name is Mike Reber, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for the american Sand association. You are receiving my e-mail as we seek volunteers to assist us with our booth at the Pomona Off Road Expo. On your aSa membership application, you had indicated that you would be interested in serving the aSa in this capacity, and our database indicates that you reside fairly close to the venue.

The Pomona Off Road Expo. It has turned into quite an event that rivals other shows, boasting exhibits and vendors covering EVERY aspect of off-roading. aSa's presence at this show is a fantastic opportunity to inform, unite and mobilize members of this community who may not be familiar with our Sand related activities. This year it will be a three day event:
Friday Oct 3rd 2PM-8PM
Saturday Oct 4th 9AM-6PM
Sunday Oct 5th 9AM-5PM

In the past, the aSa has had a great showing at this event. In the efforts to repeat that this year, we are asking you, a local member, to help where you can. While our calling is for volunteers who can be available for one of the day's durations, any amount of time would be appreciated if you can assist us in the booth with product sales, member signups, raffle ticket sales and answering 'What's New?' type questions during the show hours. In addition, we are also looking for Volunteers on Thursday, Oct 2nd, to help set up and stock the booth, a task that involves lifting & moving of merchandise and tables. This vital job is to start at 9:00am on Thursday morning and should wrap up by noon. Being that it is a weekday morning it would be a difficult time to find volunteers. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please call or E-mail myself or Jon Pergl if you are able to assist the aSa at this event.

Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,

-Mike Reber.

I'll send more tomorrow.

To my knowledge, this is the first time we've needed to reach out to the General [i.e. non-bbs] Membership for Volunteers to man a booth.

Not exactly Woody. But the Pomona show, being so close after the SSSS, and growing as big as it has, brings unique problems that require uniqe solutions.

=D> =D> Nice job Woody. Unfortunately, with this economy, most people will probably be busy trying to support their families. Hope the effort gets what is needed. Wonder if the shows, all of them, if their attendance will be lower this year than last? Seems likely to me. Obviously the numbers are down in the dunes a bit, from what I have heard, and certainly visitors to this BBS and ASA volunteers also seem to be fewer. I guess it's just another "sign of the times".

I'd like to help out Jon, but like you said that is out of range for me. Plus we will be getting ready for a BLM/UDG/TRT/ASA "shindig" at the South Dunes the following weekend. Watch for more news soon.

DuneRookie,
Thanks for the huge offer.
I don't know if Jon has already told me what day to be there, but I think its saturday.
I plan to be there all day as well.
If you'd like, you can drive up to Elsinore (approx 60 miles from San Diego) and meet me at my house in the a.m. and I'll take you the rest of the way in my truck.
I live less than 2miles off of the 15 frwy.
Game on?

Thats a possibility and thank you for the offer. There is a chance I will go up night before but still too early to decide. I have relatives up in Orange I can stay with. Just need to see how things are going with work up to that point. I will confirm with you a couple weeks before the show if that is ok.

Ya'll won't believe this. We still need more people.

Just wondering what your reason is for not being able to help out in October. Your information might help us decide how to staff these events.

DoonRookie,
My plans have changed, I'll now be at the show on Sunday instead of Saturday.
but, you are still welcome to join me from Elsinore.
I'll be leaving there at 9:00am, and returning there after cleanup is completed in Pomona.
Holler up!

Hey WG.. Thanks for the update. Jon mentioned it to me at the SSSS. I am still going Saturday. Fits my personal schedule better. I will probably go up Friday to Orange and stay with relatives and go to Pomona from there. :)

What time do you plan to setup on Thursday?

I will be there all weekend working the CLORV booth again so I'll be there on Thrusday setting up the 10x10 booth which is really fast to set up.

Sooooo...depending on the time, I can help.

That is up to Sand Dragon. Shes the boss on this one. I'm just going to sit there and twittle my thumbs. I like the sound of 9 or 10 AM. When we get there early theres a bit of a back up (but its in the shade)

Should I put up a pole? Please say no because I don't know how to do that.

Jon, what time on Friday?

After wheeling and dealing for that Thursday, I will not make it that early for set-up. With my husband's hours and getting my 12 and 7 yr olds to school, it's just not going to happen. I'm sorry I cannot help. BUT, when I get there, I will come straight over to find out if help is still needed!

You can get there earlier if you want. The show opens at 2. If you get there and the booth isn't busy then go check out the show. Of course thats between you and Lisa.

Well Dune Rookie it was an awesome show. I think any show that the ASA has a pressance at is an awesome show. We did a great job at getting the word out about the trash this season. Not everybody was happy, but I did hear about 98% of the people who we talked to said they hauled their trash out any way. The other %2 seemed to say it would be hard to talk everybody else into not dumping the trash on the ground and leaving, but all mostly thought that trash wouldn't be an issue if we kept up giving out information. That was by far the topic of the weekend.

We signed up MANY new members and your chances of winning the Sand Limo Raffle car decreased.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Lisa Markley who headed up the booth Friday and Saturday along with helping set the booth up Thursday.
Bill Jones who took time away from his job to come down on Thursday to help set up
John Halbur who also took time from his job to help set up on Thursday. That guy is relentless!! He works so hard that no one around him is allowed to do anything.
Viki Cosey who rushed down to help Thursday but found that we were already done setting up, then popped in every so often ALL WEEKEND to see if we needed help.
Scotty Tant who came up from Fallbrook on a Friday afternoon and stayed for the whole show
Larry Penning who beat Lisa to the booth from Orange County and stayed the whole day Saturday.
Chuck Moore was the first at the booth Sunday, worked all day, transported the raffle car and didn't get back home to play with his slick new Billion dollar air presure gauge till 9PM
Nanette Shallcross who found me wondering aimlessly around the will call desk led me to the Damzel booth, got me a Damzel fuel, and took me back to the booth where she made sure we had enough people through out the day wasn't even supose to be there (as far as I knew) but was there to help anyway.
Steve and Nina Lemay who worked the booth Sunday, stayed thru take down, helped load the merchandise trailer late into the night.
Mike Reber who drove two hours up from Lake Elsinore, took three trams thru the parking lot, can give Jim Colln a run for his money talking to people, also stayed late into the night loading the merchandise trailer, but THEN!!!! Took the trailer South, gaurded it at his house till another ASA volunteer picked it up to take it to El Cajon Toyota in two weeks.

Yes Dune Rookie it was a GREAT show for the ASA. Anytime we can get the booth set up, have it manned for 99.9% of the show, and we all have a great time to boot? I'd say we had the bestest 3 day show ever at Pomona.

Here are some crappy pictures. My camera doesn't do well in indoors.

And I would be a horrible friend to forget Brian Trapp who also helped with transportation issues.

Thanks again to all that helped out. These are difficult shows, in difficult times. Thiss one was a bit harder being just two weeks after the SSSS and three days long. All the people mentioned above deserve a huge pat on the back and free food next time they are in your camp.

They were sent off seperate to be inputted. More than last year
Woodglue wrote:How many raffle tix?
same as last year
Woodglue wrote:How mayny $$$ in sales?
Way less than last year.

All in all it was better than I expected. Friday was dead, cold and rainy Saturday, Sunday really kicked butt, but never poured people with money to burn.
NOT for a lack of trying on the volunteers part though.
Yay! to them...ALL of them =D>

Well, that was about as informative as lastnight's Presidential Debate. ](*,)

You dip!!! That hurt my neck. I had to write it out only to try to figure out (guess really) that the 8 was a "b'?

With out going into too much detail I think I posted about what I could/should post. If any members would like to see the actual numbers I'm sure the treasurer would make them available upon request, or you can PM me.

It was a good show. We did great as we normally do.

But we digress, good show it was.
I had a lot of fun.
I have a thought about how these shows go.
From opening time until about noon is when you can be most productive in the booth, talking to people. You can really engage their interests and see that they are interested.
After noon, everyone seems to have tunnel vision, and is in a transe while doing the swap-meet shuffle. You can get them to look at you, much less engage you.
So, I say, hit it hard in the morning hours. Get people to become members, buy passes, learn about the trash issues, tell them about the New RAMP, etc.
Cause after noon, when the beer's been flowing for a while, it probably isn't going to happen.

Thanks to all of you that stepped up to support the ASA at this event. This is what it takes to get the word out about the issues at the ISDRA. While not eveyone has to agree on the issues it is important to make the information available.

Hopefully having the correct information will get more people intrested in becoming more involved.

Good job to all that helped.
